Classic New England Holiday Tree Farm Engagement Session

Winter Engagement Photos at a Holiday Tree Farm

For the couple that loves the holidays and wintertime, no better place to do your engagement photos than a holiday tree farm! This is exactly how SK and Derek decided on the location for their own engagement photos. I tend to photograph most of my couples in the spring, summer, and fall — so a wintertime session was a fun way to mix things up for me too!

SK and Derek are currently planning a winter wedding at The Newbury, planned to open next year in Boston! The wedding theme for this holiday loving couple? Christmas, of course! Which made it even more fitting that we capture their engagement photos at a holiday tree farm!

The Perfect Winter Day for Engagement Photos

Those of us in New England know well how unpredictable the winter weather can be! Luckily, our session was scheduled for the day after a perfect snowfall! It was definitely cold, but SK and Derek were determined to make their snowy holiday tree farm photo dreams come to life!

SK and Derek had the perfect mix of outfits for a snowy, wintertime session. For their more casual look, they wore knit sweaters layered with their winter jackets. We started in this outfit to get warmed up together. For colder sessions, I love that jackets give you multiple looks without an official outfit change! To wrap up the session, SK and Derek changed into a more polished winter look — with lots of layers again!

Natural and Relaxed Engagement Photos

So often, couples begin to plan for their engagement session fixated on the backdrops for their photos. And while I definitely appreciate a stunning view, I equally love more ordinary scenery too. My love for the more ordinary scenes is because I find that couples’ personalities and bonds can really shine in the photos! Instead of focusing on the background and getting “the shot”, couples are able to focus all of their attention on each other! Not to mention that there tend to be far fewer people in these sorts of locations — another easy way for couples to feel more natural and relaxed.

For all of those reasons and more, I love that we got to capture this holiday tree farm session! The backdrops were all relatively the same, making the focus moreso on them as a couple. It lead to a session that really captured the essence of their relationship along with the classic “need-to-have” photo as well!
